Fubo Hill lies in downtown Guilin and
on the western bank of the Li River. Fubo literally
means wave subduing in Chinese. Fubo Hill is one of
the most visited attractions in Guilin. The hill has
a height of 213 meters and emerges 62 meters above the
Li River. Southern half of the hill stands in water
and the northern half of it on land.
The Fubo Hill was named in commemoration
of the triumph of a war against invaders whose commander
is Ma Yuan (14BC-49 AD) from the Eastern Han Dynasty
(25AD-220 AD), Mayuan is also called General Fubo, and
travelers can find his bronze statue standing at the
foot of the Fubo Hill.
There is a "Returned Pearl Cave"
at the foot of the Fubo Hill, many ancient inscriptions
and carvings can be found on the wall of the cave. A
"Thousand-Buddha Cave" Connects with the "Returned
Pearl Cave" which contains in fact more than two
hundred excellent Buddha statues, most of them were
carved in the Tang dynasty (618-907) and Song dynasty
(960-1279). The best stone carving is a self-portrait
of Mi Fu (1051-1107) who is a distinguished calligrapher,
and a poem by a famous poet Fan ChengDa (1126-1193),
both of them were from the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127).
Inside the "Returned Pearl
Cave" there is an amazing "Sword-Testing Rock".
A huge stalactite pillar hanging down from the ceiling
of the cave, almost touching the ground. The space between
its point and the floor looks as if it has been cut
by a sword, hence the name.
